A Space of Empathy\u201d in the SCHIRN, is a tribute to Jamaican-born soci\u00adol\u00ado\u00adgist and cultural theo\u00adrist Stuart Hall (1932-2014). The three-channel video instal\u00adla\u00adtion consists largely of archive record\u00adings of Hall\u2019s radio and tele\u00advi\u00adsion appear\u00adances on the BBC. In the video, Hall talks about his memo\u00adries of his country of origin, Jamaica, back then still a British colony, and his arrival in the United Kingdom in the 1950s as a member of the Windrush gener\u00ada\u00adtion, which comprises people who migrated from the Common\u00adwealth states between 1948 and 1971. The name is taken from the epony\u00admous ship that brought the first immi\u00adgrants from the Caribbean across the Atlantic. He also discusses his time at Oxford Univer\u00adsity and his later role as one of the founding figures of cultural studies in Britain. In his auto\u00adbi\u00adog\u00adraphy <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguin.co.uk\/books\/300224\/familiar-stranger-by-stuart-hall\/9780141984759\">Familiar Stranger. A Life Between Two Islands<\/a><\/em>, he writes: <br><br>\u201cWe tend to think of iden\u00adtity as taking us back to our roots, the part of us which remains essen\u00adtially the same across time. In fact, iden\u00adtity is always a never-completed process of becoming \u2013 a process of shifting iden\u00adti\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtions, rather than a singular, complete, finished state of being.\u201d <br><br>For Hall, Caribbean culture is a blue\u00adprint for a hybrid society in which everyone comes from some\u00adwhere else. He describes his own family back\u00adgrounds as an amalgam of African, Jamaican, Scot\u00adtish, and Portuguese-Jewish influ\u00adences. Even the early films that Akom\u00adfrah made as a member of the Black Audio Film Collec\u00adtive, founded in 1982, were greatly inspired by the versa\u00adtile cultural theo\u00adrist. From the very start, the decon\u00adstruc\u00adtion of overly simplistic and mono\u00adlithic repre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtions of Black life in the British media lay at the heart of the collec\u00adtive\u2019s artistic work. The film collage \u201cHandsworth Songs\u201d, released in 1986, deals with the unrest and rioting that the United Kingdom saw under the repres\u00adsive poli\u00adtics of Margaret Thatcher and the misrep\u00adre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtion of events and causes of the unrest in the British media. In terms of both form and content \u201cHandsworth Songs\u201d was a ground\u00adbreaking film. Using archive mate\u00adrial, inner monologs, and a sophis\u00adti\u00adcated sound\u00adtrack, the Black Audio Film Collec\u00adtive created work a portrayal of Black British life which was cine\u00admat\u00adi\u00adcally intense and empa\u00adthetic. We invited him to look at them and then to discuss them with us because Stuart was an impor\u00adtant figure in the life of many Black Britons at the time.\u201d Together they worked on decon\u00adstructing colo\u00adnial and post-colo\u00adnial narra\u00adtives and on a new under\u00adstanding of Black dias\u00adporic iden\u00adtity. The formal aspects that would later become funda\u00admental to Akom\u00adfrah\u2019s work are already evident in the group\u2019s early output: an affir\u00adma\u00adtive, yet crit\u00adical approach to archives, the decon\u00adstruc\u00adtion of sound\u00adtracks, and an insis\u00adtence on multiple perspec\u00adtives and a discur\u00adsive focus. In Akom\u00adfrah\u2019s expan\u00adsive multi-channel projec\u00adtions it is these elements that subse\u00adquently become the defining factor for their intel\u00adlec\u00adtual and sensory inten\u00adsity. Just as Stuart Hall and John Akom\u00adfrah grasp iden\u00adtity as an ongoing process of nego\u00adti\u00ada\u00adtion with oneself and one\u2019s social envi\u00adron\u00adment, decol\u00ado\u00adniza\u00adtion is not some\u00adthing which happened at some point and no longer has any reper\u00adcus\u00adsions. On the contrary: As US author James Baldwin once put it, history is not the past.
