the New York Art Institutions<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<div  class='row'>\n\n<div  class='col col-md-6 col-xs-12'>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ho-div\">\t<p class='ho-sd-body'>When Haacke perma\u00adnently moved to New York in 1965, he arrived at a time of social upheaval and cultural revo\u00adlu\u00adtion. One event specif\u00adi\u00adcally has shaped the trajec\u00adtory of his prac\u00adtice signif\u00adi\u00adcantly and helped birth the insti\u00adtu\u00adtional critique the artist is famous for: the assas\u00adsi\u00adna\u00adtion of Martin Luther King Jr in 1968. In a letter to Jack Burnham he wrote: \u201cArt is utterly unsuited as a polit\u00adical tool. No cop will be kept from shooting a black by all the light envi\u00adron\u00adments in the world. As I\u2019ve said, I\u2019ve known that for a number of years, and I was never really both\u00adered by it. All of a sudden it bugs me. I am also asking myself, why the hell am I working in this field at all. Again, an answer is never at hand that is cred\u00adible, but it did not partic\u00adu\u00adlarly disturb me. I still have no answer, but I am no longer comfort\u00adable.\u201d<br><br>As a result, Haacke started working at the inter\u00adsec\u00adtion of art and the social, polit\u00adical world, he dove deep into the connec\u00adtions between art insti\u00adtu\u00adtions and their donors and spon\u00adsors, starting with the famous \u201cMoMA Poll\u201d from 1970. Secretly to all, the cura\u00adtors, the museum\u2019s director at the time, as well as the board, he prepared a polit\u00adi\u00adcally loaded poll ques\u00adtion: \u201cWould the fact that Governor Rock\u00ade\u00adfeller has not denounced Pres\u00adi\u00addent Nixon&#8217;s Indochina Policy be a reason for your not voting for him in November?\u201d at the entrance of the museum as part of a group exhi\u00adbi\u00adtion called \u201cInfor\u00adma\u00adtion\u201d. Manhattan Real Estate Hold\u00adings, A Real Time Social System, as of May 1, 1971\u201d, a piece exposing the machi\u00adna\u00adtions behind real-estate hold\u00adings owned by New York\u2019s most famous slum-lords Harry Shapolsky and others. I vividly remember his piece\u2013an envi\u00adron\u00admental work on a pedestal that used a fan to redi\u00adrect the flow of air. He was showing with Howard Wise Gallery at the time, and I knew of him but did not yet know him person\u00adally.\u201d<br><br>She and Haacke crossed path multiple times while trav\u00adel\u00adling to visit the big Euro\u00adpean group shows like the docu\u00admenta in Kassel where Haacke presented his work on more than one occa\u00adsion, including in docu\u00admenta 5 (1972) where he put together the \u201cDocu\u00admenta-Besucher\u00adprofil\u201d, a ques\u00adtion\u00adnaire with 10 demo\u00adgraphic and 10 opinion based ques\u00adtions around current socio-polit\u00adical prob\u00adlems. The Cooper Union for the Advance\u00adment of Science and Art or just short Cooper Union was founded in 1859 by Peter Cooper as a private college based on a radical new model for higher educa\u00adtion in the US: to be \u201copen and free for all.\u201d Educa\u00adtion per Cooper should be acces\u00adsible to everyone who is qual\u00adi\u00adfied disre\u00adgarding gender, race, reli\u00adgion, wealth or status &#8211; a model the school has held onto with some excep\u00adtions ever since. Appointing Hans Haacke into faculty seems more than just fitting, it feels like a match made in heaven.<br><br>With limited spaces came fierce compe\u00adti\u00adtion: photog\u00adra\u00adpher and concep\u00adtual artist Kevin Clarke who studied under Haacke from 1973 to 1976 remem\u00adbers \u201cCooper Union as an elite school and the students were consid\u00adered espe\u00adcially capable. Everyone received a full schol\u00adar\u00adship, which was unique in the USA. This made for compe\u00adti\u00adtion.\u201d To him Haacke \u201chad a casual teaching style based on his knowl\u00adedge of contem\u00adpo\u00adrary art with an emphasis on Concep\u00adtual Art and art and social respon\u00adsi\u00adbility. Other sculp\u00adture profes\u00adsors were more inter\u00adested in mini\u00admalism or romantic and spir\u00adi\u00adtual threads in art history, Hans repre\u00adsented a stricter, certainly German philos\u00adophy. I knew how to make things. Hans would notice any incon\u00adsis\u00adtency in my forms and point out that if I believed I was expressing an idea, why was this curve or line included? It may have been because of one of the show announce\u00adments he posted that we went to see Andrea Fraser\u2019s perfor\u00admance \u2018May I Help You\u2019 at Amer\u00adican Fine Arts, Co., which was pivotal in how we started to think about making art. ART CLUB2000 may not have existed had it not been for Hans.\u201d<br><br>Aside from intro\u00adducing alter\u00adna\u00adtive thinkers to his students and inviting artists to his class room like Mark Dion, Lorna Simpson, Dorothea Rock\u00adbourne, or Fred Wilson, \u201cHaacke also stopped giving assign\u00adments after second year, which forced his students to find their own voice as a crit\u00adical part of the creative process,\u201d the collective adds. \u201cHaacke as a professor not only taught tech\u00adnical skills and artistic methods but also instilled a sense of social respon\u00adsi\u00adbility, crit\u00adical thinking, and courage to ques\u00adtion the status quo.\u201d They remem\u00adber him as a \u201cbig pres\u00adence but quiet, thoughtful. He usually rode an old-style city bike to school. Which is one of the reasons that Haacke has been living since 1971 in the West\u00adbeth, a non-profit housing project that opened in 1970 in a former commer\u00adcial building to provide afford\u00adable housing, studio space, as well as a place to show their work to NY artists. Diane Arbus lived and infa\u00admously died at the West\u00adbeth and Keith Haring had one of his very first shows in Manhattan in the former Bell Labs Building. In times of housing crisis and ever increasing rents, then and today even more, it is not possible for all artists to profit from the energy New York City has to offer.
