the forthcoming Double Feature Florencia Levy offers insights into a dystopian world that is in fact our current world. Starting with a residency in China, which culminated for the artist in her being interrogated by the authorities, her video work \u201cFossil Place\u201d focuses on an autonomous region in China. Nowhere are people, let alone flora and fauna, to be seen in this life-threat\u00adening envi\u00adron\u00adment. \u201cTierra de Ciervos\u201d (Land of deer) is the name Argen\u00adtine artist Florencia Levy chose for her photo, which she shot in 2016 from the top of the Weikuang Dam on the outer edge of the Chinese city of Baotou. In 2015, jour\u00adnal\u00adists labeled the zone surrounded by dams and some eight and one half square kilo\u00adme\u00adters large where the local indus\u00adtries dump their toxic mining slurry from the rare earth mines nearby \u201chell on earth\u201d or \u201cthe worst place on Earth\u201d.<br><br>In 2016, the artist took the oppor\u00adtu\u00adnity afforded by a resi\u00addency in China to form her own opinion of the place, located in the south\u00adwest of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, which is in the north central of the People\u2019s Republic, and about 650km from Beijing. It was a research trip that had decid\u00adedly serious conse\u00adquences: Levy was arrested by Chinese secu\u00adrity force agents on the Weikuang Dam, ques\u00adtioned for several hours, and had to delete all the photographs she had taken there. \u201cI thought I was going to die. They thought I was a spy,\u201d she commented in retro\u00adspect in Argen\u00adtine daily La Naci\u00f3n. An empty concrete city in the middle of a land\u00adscape defined by steppes, conur\u00adba\u00adtions shrouded in a grey veil of smog, nature covered by concrete, and polluted rivers. The sound\u00adtrack features a woman\u2019s voice speaking to us from the future in Chinese, switching back and forth between a fictional narra\u00adtive and actual facts from everyday life in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Polluted oceans, cont\u00ada\u00adm\u00adi\u00adnated air, and poisoned soil not only destroy the habitat of non-human nature, but humans them\u00adselves suffer from the conse\u00adquences of preda\u00adtory mining: They fall prey to pulmonary diseases, cancer, or endocrino\u00adlog\u00adical diseases and even their unborn chil\u00addren are affected. A man is haunted by old memo\u00adries of the place where a city of millions now stands: there, donkeys once grazed, animals drank from the now toxi\u00adcally polluted water. Social contacts among people have also suffered. The echo of their lives can only be sensed in the masses of stone in Levy\u2019s filmic work.<br><br>Along\u00adside the video, Levy also presents a section from her work \u201cHundreds of Millions of Years for These Forms\u201d, produced in 2023, which focuses on the phenom\u00adenon of deep-sea mining and is performed by a choir consisting of 12 posthuman enti\u00adties. The essay\u00adistic film produced in 1953 essen\u00adtially takes up where Levy\u2019s \u201cLugar f\u00f3sil\u201d ends. \u201cIf people die, they enter into history. If statues die, they become art. This botany of death is what we call culture,\u201d the film tells us right at the begin\u00adning. The film was commis\u00adsioned by Alioune Diop\u2019s pan-African maga\u00adzine \u201cPr\u00e9sence Africaine\u201d and devotes itself to the histor\u00adical art and culture of Africa south of the Sahara in the museum context. Irri\u00adtated by the fact that such art was exclu\u00adsively exhib\u00adited in Paris\u2019 anthro\u00adpo\u00adlog\u00adical Mus\u00e9e de l\u2019Homme and not, for example, in an art museum such as the Louvre, during the prepro\u00adduc\u00adtion of the film the direc\u00adtors adopted an ever more anti-colo\u00adnialist vantage point, far more so than was according to Alain Resnais orig\u00adi\u00adnally planned. In shots lasting several minutes, the film shows us expres\u00adsively illu\u00admi\u00adnated statues, sculp\u00adtures, and masks, commenting emphat\u00adi\u00adcally on the rela\u00adtion\u00adship of art and culture, engages specif\u00adi\u00adcally in the latter third with the longevity of colo\u00adnial perspec\u00adtives.
